UCI Road World Championships Innsbruck-Tirol - The numbers behind a huge success

Some stats and figures show how big this year’s flagship road cycling event has been

600.000 fans alongside the roads were supporting the riders during the 2018 UCI Road World Championships

Yesterday, with the victory of Alejandro Valverde in the Men Elite category, marked the end of an unforgettable edition of the UCI Road World Championships in Innsbruck-Tirol. Below are some numbers from the event:

  • 1 – gold medal for the 18-year-old Laura Stigger in front of her home crowd. Stigger became World Champion in just her second road race ever
  • 1 – the finishing position of Anna van der Breggen (NED) and Alejandro Valverde (ESP). The two riders won the Women and Men Elite Road Races on courses that were said to be the toughest in years
  • 2 – the number of Rainbow Jerseys Laura Stigger, local hero who was born and raised in Tirol, won during the last month. The home win in the Junior Women’s Road Race was her second World title victory this month after securing the Rainbow Jersey in mountain biking just two weeks ago in Switzerland
  • 6 – the number of titles won this season by Remco Evenepoel in Junior National, European and World Championships, both in Road Race and Time Trial events
  • 6 – the number of medals Belgium won during the 2018 UCI Road World Championships
  • 7 – the number of medals the Netherlands won during the 2018 UCI Road World Championships
  • 9 – action packed days of racing and celebration
  • 12 – races through the beautiful landscape of Tirol. Every single race finished in the host city Innsbruck, while the starts were hosted in remote areas of Tirol: Ötztal / AREA 47, Hall-Wattens / Swarovski Kristallwelten, Alpbachtal Seenland / Rattenberg and Kufstein
  • 16 – the age of the youngest rider participating at the 2018 UCI Road World Championships (Nadjaf Baghirov from Azerbaijan, born 22.12.2001, who competed in the Men Junior Road Race)
  • 17 – the number of times the “Golden Roof” of Innsbruck was passed by riders during the races of the 2018 UCI Road World Championships
  • 49.585km/h – the high average speed of Rohan Dennis who won the Individual Time Trial Men Elite
  • 50 – more than 50 radio and TV stations broadcasted live from Innsbruck-Tirol
  • 51 – the age of the oldest rider participating at the 2018 UCI Road World Championships (Edwige Pitel from France, born 04.06.1967, who competed in the Women Elite Team Time Trial and Road Race)
  • 52.544km/h – average speed of the Team Time Trial Women
  • 55.522km/h – average speed of the Team Time Trial Men
  • 66 – medals (36 in the Team Time Trials and 30 in the Individual Time Trials and Road Races)
  • 70 – riders from Italy and the Netherlands, the best represented countries, then Germany (64), Denmark (49), Austria (49) and France (47)
  • 77 – countries represented by 1,275 athletes
  • 122 – Skoda vehicles involved in the event
  • 150 – countries providing TV coverage
  • 764 – a total of 764 media representatives were present in Innsbruck-Tirol
  • 800 – kilograms of apples provided by the local producer “Bio vom Berg”
  • 1,000 – kilograms of Testa Rossa coffee served
  • 1,059 – total accreditations printed
  • 1,100km – the total distance of all the courses – public roads that were closed for the event thanks to the combined efforts of the local Police, the local firefighters and the local volunteers
  • 1,275 – the number of athletes participating over the nine days of racing
  • 1,288 – bike checks for technological fraud have been carried out on the 12 events of the 2018 UCI Road World Championships in Innsbruck-Tirol, Austria
  • 1,492 – volunteers were working on the 2018 UCI Road World Championships, with a total of 34,500 working hours
  • 11,895 – articles published online about the 2018 UCI Road World Championships in Innsbruck-Tirol from 22 to 30 September
  • 15,500km – the distance between Innsbruck and Adelaide, Australia, home town of Rohan Dennis, winner of the Men’s Elite Individual Time Trial
